I'm considering an upgrade for my CPU since it's starting to struggle with recent games, like Monster Hunter, which seems to make my current setup quite the challenge. I've built PCs before, but I'm always unsure about which CPU would be a better fit. My boyfriend and I have the same build, so his upgrade will follow mine. I want to make sure this upgrade is worth the investment.
Right now, I'm running a 12th Gen Intel Core i5-12600 at 3.30 GHz, and I'm thinking about moving up to an Intel Core i7-12700KF at 3.6 GHz with 12 cores. Here's a quick rundown of my setup:
- RAM: 32.0 GB (31.8 GB usable)
- Storage: 233 GB SSD NVMe, 149 GB HDD, and a couple of large NVMe drives
- Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 (12 GB)
I appreciate any advice you can give me!

Upgrading to the i7 might not be the best choice right now. The issue you're facing in gaming is likely due to your graphics card—the RTX 3060 isn't performing like the more powerful cards out there. If you upgrade your CPU, you might not see much gain and could just be leading yourself into a situation where you end up needing a new GPU soon after. I'd recommend focusing on getting a better GPU first if you're planning another upgrade.
Thanks for the feedback! I really want to maximize my gaming experience, so it sounds like I should reconsider my priorities and maybe wait a bit longer for the right GPU before making any CPU changes.
You’ll probably see around a 2-3% performance increase with that CPU upgrade. Unless you have specific tasks that really need those extra cores, I’d suggest holding off for now and looking at an i5-14600K for a better upgrade path in the future.
Honestly, it really depends on the price of the i7. The 12600K doesn't have the efficiency cores, so moving to 12700KF adds more performance with the extra cores. Yet, if you're sticking with a 3060, it might not make a huge difference. Save that cash and consider a GPU upgrade first if possible.
Good point! If you see a good deal, it might be worth it. But long-term, better GPU options may yield more substantial performance for your games.

Yeah, the GPU market is a bit crazy now, but I think saving up for one is a smart move. If your CPU shows high usage, that’s a sign, but a solid GPU will give you a bigger jump in performance!
