Is Upgrading to 128GB DDR5 RAM for a 9950X3D Worth It?

I'm currently using a DDR4 32GB RAM setup and often max it out while running various software tools and databases. To prepare for the future, I'm considering upgrading to 128GB DDR5 RAM for my upcoming build with the 9950X3D processor, which costs about £580. With the current RAM shortage, my options are somewhat limited. I've found multiple RAM configurations:

- 96GB, Corsair 2x48GB 6000MHz CAS36 for £280
- 96GB, Corsair 2x48GB 6000MHz CAS30 for £490
- 96GB, Corsair 2x48GB 6400MHz CAS32 for £524
- 128GB, Crucial 2x64GB 5600MHz CAS46 for £400
- 128GB, Corsair 2x64GB 6400MHz CAS42 for £600
- 128GB, Kingston Fury 4x - 1x32GB, CAS32 for £522 ( non-matching)

While I don't expect to reach the 96GB limit anytime soon, I want to ensure I have enough RAM for my tasks. I'm curious whether I should stick with 2 DIMMs for the 9950X3D and if spending extra on the 6000MHz CAS30 is worthwhile since it's almost double the price. Also, any recommendations for a new motherboard? My current MSI B550 needs a replacement too.

You might want to consider the 128GB 6400MHz CAS42 option. The performance difference between CAS30 and CAS36 isn't huge when it comes to practical use, especially since you won't be gaming much. Higher capacity RAM helps out with multitasking, especially if you often have demanding apps running.

Definitely go for two sticks! They're usually more stable, especially if you're not focused on gaming. Additionally, while you might not need blazing-fast RAM, the difference in speed between CAS numbers can indeed impact performance—especially for tasks that require quick memory access.
