Is upgrading to a Ryzen 5 3600 and 1080 Ti a smart choice for a budget build?

I'm considering upgrading my 6-year-old build with an i5 8400 and 1660 Ti to improve performance, which has been lagging lately. I'm thinking about getting a Ryzen 5 3600 along with a refurbished 1080 Ti for around $350. Would that be a worthwhile upgrade for my setup?

While the 1080 Ti has its fans, I’d really push for something newer like the 4060 Ti or even the 5060 series if your budget allows. It’ll make a bigger difference, especially with features like DLSS.

Honestly, the gaming performance of the Ryzen 5 3600 won't be a huge leap from your i5 8400. For $350, I’d definitely recommend looking at something like the 9060 XT instead. Plus, you can sell your old 1660 Ti to offset some costs!

Good points! The i5 8400 is still a surprisingly capable chip. I upgraded from one myself and could recommend keeping an eye on it if someone's looking to build on a budget.

I had a similar setup with an i5 8400 and 1080 Ti. It performed well, but I found the CPU limited my experience in some games. Just something to consider!

I'd recommend aiming for a newer GPU, like a 9060 XT or 5060 Ti, if you're using an i5 8400. Your CPU is likely holding you back more than you'd think. And make sure your power supply can handle the upgrade!

Great advice! Focus on upgrading the GPU now and plan for a full system upgrade later. Just take into account what games you play.

If you’re thinking about a full new system later, investing in something like the AMD AM5 or AM6 now could also set you up nicely!

Definitely skip the 1080 Ti these days; it’s not worth more than $50 in my opinion. There's no driver support anymore, and I’ve seen friends have crashing issues with them. I’d go for a 5060 Ti or a 9060 XT instead for longer-term support and better performance.

I mean, it's worth a bit more than that! I'd say it’s still in the range of $100 to $150 based on current market rates.
