Is Upgrading to an RTX 5080 Worth It Even with a CPU Bottleneck?

Hey everyone! My girlfriend's current PC build includes a GIGABYTE B550 Gaming X V2 motherboard, a Ryzen 7 5700X3D processor, 32GB of DDR-3200 RAM, an Asus GeForce RTX 3060, and a BeQuiet Powerzone 2 1000W PSU. She's been livestreaming on Twitch without issues, but recently switched from static overlays to animated ones, and now, during gaming streams, both her monitors occasionally go black and stay that way until she restarts the computer. This seems to suggest the GPU may be crashing.

I'm considering upgrading her GPU to an RTX 5080 to resolve these issues. I know there might be a bottleneck from the CPU, but I wonder, even with that potential bottleneck, would the 5080 offer a significant performance boost compared to the 3060? And if so, why? I'm eager to understand how this works from a technical perspective! Also, if you have any other potential solutions in mind, I'm all ears!

Generally, the 5700X3D is a solid gaming CPU, so while it is capable, the bottleneck could affect FPS in intense scenarios. At lower resolutions or less demanding games, you might not see the full power of the 5080, which is useful for streaming and high-quality graphics in modern games. Just keep an eye on what games you're playing as that can affect GPU usage significantly!

When her monitors go black, do they show any messages or just go black like nothing's connected? If they disconnect, there could be a hardware issue with the GPU itself that's just bubbling to the surface. If they stay black, it could point to a software problem. Try hitting Windows Key + Ctrl + Shift + B to restart the display drivers next time—this could indicate if it's a software glitch. Either way, a GPU upgrade seems like a solid plan because the 5080 can handle more complex tasks, especially with streaming in mind!

Think of it this way: upgrading to the 5080 is like Usain Bolt competing against us normal folks while wearing a weighted vest because of the CPU bottleneck. Even with that weight, his speed is still going to be far superior. The 5080's performance would be much higher, and when you get around to upgrading the CPU later, you'll really see the difference!

That's a great analogy! It really helps visualize what to expect. Thanks!

Absolutely, upgrading to the RTX 5080 will definitely provide a noticeable performance boost compared to the 3060! Your Ryzen 7 5700X3D is still a strong CPU, so while there will be some bottlenecking, it won't be drastically limiting performance, especially at higher resolutions. You're gonna be happy with the upgrade!

Thanks for confirming that! I'm excited about the potential boost!

Before you go for the upgrade, have you tried updating her GPU drivers? Sometimes, issues like this can be tied to driver problems. Make sure both monitors are on the right ports, and consider switching their cables around to see if that helps. Give that a shot before dropping cash on a new GPU!

I did try downgrading to some older drivers, but the issue persists. I really think it’s related to the new overlays!
