Is Upgrading to Four 8GB DDR4 Sticks a Good Idea?

I'm considering upgrading my RAM and I currently have two 8GB DDR4 sticks. I can't upgrade to DDR5 right now, so I'm thinking about getting another pair of 8GB sticks of DDR4 with the same clock speed as my current ones. I've read that using all four RAM slots might not be ideal and that it's generally better to use two slots with higher capacity. However, the prices for RAM here make the four-slot option more appealing. What's everyone's take on this? Are four sticks of 8GB DDR4 a good choice, or should I stick to two?

You'll find that switching to four sticks can cause some speed issues depending on your setup. My experience is that two sticks generally offer better stability, especially if you're aiming for higher speeds. But if you're maxing out your usage, then sure, get those four sticks. Just check your motherboard compatibility to avoid any headaches!

Thanks for outlining that! I really don't want to deal with stability problems.

I’ve run both 2 and 4 sticks in the past. Honestly, if the price is right and you need the extra memory, go for the four sticks! I didn't notice much of a difference in performance between 16GB in two slots versus 32GB across four. Just make sure the timings and speeds are the same, so you don’t run into issues.

Remember, moving to four sticks can complicate things for higher speeds like 3600MHz. Sometimes, it requires extra tweaking in BIOS. Generally, for DDR4, two sticks are simpler for stability, but if you need that extra RAM for applications, then four is fine!

With DDR4, you're less likely to see problems than with DDR5. Just looking ahead, production for DDR4 might drop soon, so snagging those extra sticks could be wise! Check your motherboard’s specs too—make sure it can handle the speeds you're after.

Honestly, 16GB is still plenty of RAM for most gaming setups. If you're running games at high graphics settings or resolutions, it might be worth checking your specs first. Just make sure you're okay with 32GB if you go for those four slots. Some say running all four can complicate things, though, so keep that in mind!

I get wanting to grab that upgrade before prices go up even further! But really, just focusing on availability might be your best bet right now.
