Is Upgrading to i5-12400f Worth It for Better FPS in GTA Online?

I'm currently using an i3-12100f with a stock cooler and an MSI H610M-E DDR4 motherboard, paired with 32GB of G.Skill Aegis RAM running at 3200MHz with XMP. My GPU is a GTX 1070 Ti and I have a 970 Evo Plus M.2 SSD, powered by a TX750M PSU, all enclosed in a Corsair Carbide 400R case. My setup handles GTA V well temperature-wise, maxing out at 65 degrees Celsius.

I'm considering an upgrade to an i5-12400f to improve my FPS stability in GTA Online public lobbies, especially since I love playing at 1080p with very high graphics. Currently, my i3 struggles to maintain 60 FPS, despite the average being around 90-105 FPS, because the low 1% FPS dips down to between 28-45, which feels awful. I've tried tweaking all advanced settings and overclocking, but nothing has helped.

I live in the Netherlands where I could get the i5 for about 140€ or 120€ for a tray model without the cooler. A decent B760M motherboard costs around 90€, and upgrading my CPU could also improve GPU utilization from its current max of 70%. I'm ready to spend around 400€ but would prefer to avoid replacing too many components if possible. I'm really just looking for a stable FPS in public lobbies rather than invite-only sessions. Any thoughts on whether upgrading to the i5 would be beneficial?

Definitely consider upgrading to the i5-12400f. It offers better performance, and you might even want to look into the i5-14400f if it's within your budget. Both should give you the stability you're after in GTA Online.

Just a heads up, be sure to update your BIOS before making the switch to ensure compatibility. You wouldn't want to run into any issues there.

That sounds like a solid plan! Just keep an eye out for any additional comments and advice before you commit to the upgrade.

I actually looked into upgrading to the 12400f recently for similar issues but found that I could fix my GTA Online performance just by lowering certain settings like population density. Unless you have other needs, upgrading might not be necessary just for this game.

If you're thinking about coolers, check out the Phantom Spirit 120 or the Peerless Assassin 120. They’re pretty budget-friendly. For better cooling, a mounting bracket is essential since Intel's stock ones can cause contact issues.
