Is Upgrading to the 14th Gen Intel CPUs Worth It?

I'm currently using an older CPU and motherboard combo—an i7 9700k paired with a Z370 board. I've been thinking about upgrading since my CPU is bottlenecking my performance in games like Battlefield 6; my RTX 3080 is only running at 60% while the CPU hits 100%. The recent surge in memory prices is making me hesitant, and although I'm considering the AM5 platform along with a 9800x3d, I'm not ready to spend that much on memory right now. I have a decent DDR4 kit, 32GB at 3600MHz. I found the 14600k priced at around $250 and a B760 motherboard for $130. I'm struggling to find a more cost-effective upgrade option that makes sense. Is there a better path I could take?

I say go for the 14th gen! They're definitely worth it right now, especially since prices have dropped. Just make sure to update the BIOS before you install your CPU, it's pretty important. If you find the 13600k(f) for a good deal, that's a solid option too. You won't run into those degradation issues like you might with the other gens.

While the 14th gen might seem appealing, I'd be cautious because of some reported voltage issues. Though BIOS updates may have fixed them, I’d lean towards the 12th or 13th gens instead.

You might want to consider the 12th gen Intel CPUs instead. They can provide similar performance for a lower price, and you can avoid those degradation issues that have been noted with the 13th and 14th generations.

With DDR5 prices still high and 13th/14th gen CPUs dropped in price, upgrading is a smart choice. But if you're looking to save even more, you might find a used 5700 X3D with a B550 board, or consider second-hand options like the 12600K or 12700K.
