Is Using 4 DDR4 RAM Sticks Safe for My System?

I'm currently running 16GB of DDR4 RAM (2 sticks of 8GB, 3200MHz) and I'm looking to upgrade to 32GB. Due to RAM prices being quite high right now, I'm thinking about just picking up another identical set of 2 sticks of 8GB instead of replacing my existing sticks with a new 2x16GB kit. I want to know if it's generally safe and stable to run 4 sticks of DDR4 RAM. Are there any potential downsides I should be aware of, like compatibility issues, XMP problems, or added stress on the memory controller? All kits would have the same brand, speed, and timings. Any advice or personal experiences would be appreciated, thanks!

It’s totally fine to run 4 sticks instead of 2. In fact, it gives you some benefits. If one stick starts acting up down the line, you can easily identify the faulty one by testing them individually. I’ve had that happen to me, and it was much easier to handle than if I’d had a single 32GB module.

Using 4 sticks at 3200MHz is generally safe, especially if they're identical kits. I haven't run into too many issues with compatibility. Just keep in mind that the problems usually arise when you push beyond that speed. Also, since you're using Zen 3 tech, you should be in a solid position.

Thanks for confirming! I am using Zen 3 (Ryzen 5 5600). My motherboard is a B550M-K from Gigabyte.

I did something similar last year. Initially, I had a 2x8GB Corsair kit and bought another identical set while waiting for a faulty one to get replaced. Ran them at 3200MHz without any problems after that, so I think you’re safe here.

It should work fine as long as they're matching kits in speed and other specs. I've had good experiences with this setup without any hitches.

While it’s safe, I generally recommend against mixing kits because it can sometimes lead to system issues. Just make sure to check compatibility carefully.

Yes, it’s safe to use 4 sticks, but you might find limitations on overclocking potential. XMP should work out of the box since you’re not pushing any crazy speeds. If it doesn’t, you can always manually tune it for stability.
