Is Using AI Helpful for Learning Programming?

I'm looking for advice on whether using AI can actually help me learn programming effectively. I'm currently in my first year as an IT student. I've been following resources like W3 Schools to learn the fundamentals of Java. After practicing, I sometimes turn to AI, like ChatGPT, to help me solve problems or understand errors I encounter. Whenever I make a mistake and get some feedback from AI, I try to solve similar problems again to ensure I understand. However, I've noticed various opinions online suggesting that relying on AI for learning isn't the best approach. I'm curious if it's beneficial to use AI in this way or if I should avoid it altogether. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Using AI can definitely be beneficial when you're starting out in programming. It's a great supplement, but don't forget to check out other resources like online courses or tutorials to broaden your learning experience.

I think using AI is a good idea, but you definitely need to make sure you're also learning to think through problems on your own. It's important to struggle a bit—every great programmer has gone through tough spots without AI to help them. Don't skip that part, even if it takes a while!

Totally agree! It's like browsing the web or reading documentation without relying on AI—pretend you're coding back in 2010!

Absolutely, using AI can be a fantastic next step for you! Just keep in mind that while it's helpful, you still want to build the skills to solve problems independently. Some people argue against using AI, but they just might not be comfortable with it themselves. Keep pushing yourself, and you'll gain the skills needed to tackle challenges on your own.

If you're aware that becoming over-reliant on AI can be a pitfall, it might be better to minimize your use of it. Relying too much on AI to solve your problems can hinder your learning in the long run. When you're stuck and turn to AI, make sure to still search for problems to solve independently—this will help you genuinely learn. You're early in your university journey, so take the time to discover what works best for you!
