Is Water Cooling Worth It for My New Build?

I'm about to start a new job at H&R Block as a tax associate and want to upgrade my setup. I'm planning to get a 4K monitor and some new computer parts to enhance my gaming experience. Right now, I'm using a Cooler Master Hyper 212 for CPU cooling. What else can I do to improve my build? I'm curious if switching to water cooling is worth it, especially since I don't really overclock my components. Does it even matter?

This really depends on your specific build. For instance, I went from a 120mm to a 360mm AIO on my 65w 7600 and saw temperatures drop from 67°C to 63°C under load. If you're not overclocking, however, the noise might be the main reason you'd switch to AIO. But for basic needs, air cooling should do just fine.

What type of water cooling are you considering? AIO (All-In-One) or a custom loop? Honestly, I'm a fan of air cooling since it only has one point that can fail—the fan. If a pump fails or there's a leak with an AIO, it can get messy fast. Custom loops need yearly maintenance like water replacements, which can be a hassle too. For me, air cooling is just simpler.

First off, what's the rest of your build like? If you're getting good temperatures with your current setup, I'd say there's no urgent need to ditch the Hyper 212. Depending on your new parts, you might consider a dual tower air cooler for better performance, or if you're thinking about water cooling, the ARCTIC Liquid Freezer II is a solid option. Just keep in mind that water cooling can cost a lot more and introduces more points of potential failure—so weigh your options carefully!

If you’re going with any of the newer Intel i7s or top AMD chips like the 7800x3d, water cooling is definitely recommended for better temps, but even then, a heavy air cooler should work fine for most scenarios.

Here’s a look at my current build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/7NCswY. I'm actually planning to sell my CPU, GPU, RAM, and motherboard to upgrade to this: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/rHHY3w so I can game at 4K instead of 1080p.
