I'm an American who recently made a friend from China. He installed Instagram on his Vivo phone, but I'm unsure if it will work for him once he's back in China. He mentioned using WeChat, but I have serious privacy concerns about downloading it. Are there any safer alternatives for instant messaging, like WhatsApp, Snapchat, or Messenger? Or should I trust WeChat enough to use it? Thanks for any advice!

From what I understand, WeChat is free of malware, but it's not private at all. The Chinese government logs all messages, so if privacy is a concern, you might want to think twice about using it.
You should definitely be aware that WeChat is likely monitored by the Chinese government. That's why apps like WhatsApp and others may not function properly in China due to their restrictions.
I'm not super tech-savvy, but do they actually sell our info? What happens after they log it?
