I'm running into a frustrating issue while trying to back up my iPhone 16 to iTunes on my Windows 11 PC. Every time I attempt the backup, I receive a message saying that my iPhone has been disconnected, even though it remains plugged in and visible on iTunes.
Here are some details:
- iPhone model: 16 with the latest iOS
- Operating System: Windows 11
- iTunes: Just reinstalled and up to date
- Connection: Using a USB-C to USB-A cable
- Ports: I've tried both the front and back USB ports on my PC.
When I try to back up, here's what happens:
1. I connect my iPhone, and iTunes recognizes it.
2. I select 'Back Up Now.'
3. The process starts but quickly throws up a message saying the iPhone has disconnected.
4. Importantly, the phone is still unlocked and connected.
What I've already attempted:
- Restarted both my iPhone and PC.
- Reinstalled iTunes.
- Tested multiple USB ports.
- Disabled the screen lock during the backup.
- Verified that I tapped 'Trust This Computer.'
- Turned off Wi-Fi sync in iTunes.
I'm curious if this could be related to the USB cable, even though the phone shows up fine in iTunes. Also, is there any chance that a Windows 11 setting might be causing the USB ports to sleep?
If anyone has experienced this situation and can provide some guidance, I would greatly appreciate it. If needed, I can share the specific iTunes error log too. Thanks!

It sounds like you're dealing with a USB A port issue. In my experience, switching to a USB-C to USB-C connection tends to solve this. For some reason, PCs with AMD processors struggle with USB connectivity for iPhones newer than the 12. I had a computer that worked fine until my iPhone 12, and then all newer models had issues. Try using a USB-C port in the back of your machine if there's one available—this often resolves the problem. You could also test the iPhone on another machine to see if that resolves the connectivity issue.
You might want to consider ditching iTunes altogether and using the Apple Devices app instead. Since its official launch in February 2024, Apple Devices will likely receive more updates and support than iTunes on Windows, which seems to be fading out. I switched recently, but be careful as some people have experienced new issues when backing up, so manage your expectations!
