I just got a new phone but can't access my old one. I know my Apple ID and password, but when I try to log in, it asks for a verification code sent to my old phone, which I don't have anymore. When I select that I don't have access to my phone, it asks for a code sent to my phone number, but once again, I can't get that either. I've started the recovery process, but I'm seeing really long wait times. This seems more like a process for forgetting a password, but I do know my password. Can someone explain why I'm experiencing this issue?

Have you activated service on your new phone with the same number as your old one? If you haven't, you might need to contact your carrier to get it set up first.

I can't even get past the Apple ID login, so would they be able to activate service before that?
