Issues with Lenovo ThinkPads and Docking Station Flickering Displays

I'm reaching out about a frustrating issue with Lenovo ThinkPad P1 and P2 models connected to a workstation dock with three external displays (all under 4K). Most of the time, they function well, but some users experience persistent flickering problems, while others find that the external displays fail to connect properly after the first use of the day or after the laptop goes to sleep. It's puzzling since all machines are configured the same. I've already updated the BIOS, docking station firmware, graphics drivers, monitor drivers, and Thunderbolt drivers, but nothing's worked. I'm beginning to regret the whole docking station setup. Has anyone managed to solve these display problems?

I had a similar situation when I first set up two 4K screens. We found a Lenovo support chart that listed which laptop models and docking stations can support specific screen configurations. My flickering issue was resolved when I dropped one screen's refresh rate to 30 Hz, but we eventually found a dock that supports two 4K screens at 60 Hz. Don't forget to check cable quality – two of our DisplayPort cables went bad at the same time, causing issues. Static interference could also be at play here.

The dock I have supports up to 3840x2160 at 60Hz; might try reducing to 59.95Hz just to play it safe. Hoping the ferrite cores work out for me too!

Switching to DisplayPort made a significant difference for us regarding external displays.

We faced similar issues, and it turned out that static electricity was causing the flickering. The heating in our office reduced humidity, which intensified electromagnetic interference (EMI) from static and affected the monitors. Even certain desk chairs can contribute to the problem. We tried using Ferrite cores on the cables, and it has fixed our flickering issues. No complaints since!

I'll give the ferrite cores a try and report back - fingers crossed, thanks!

Sometimes, monitor flickering can be caused by poor-quality HDMI cables. Another possible culprit is electromagnetic interference from office chairs when you sit or stand. You'd be surprised how these things affect the video signal!

Every time my cat walks across my monitor arm, the video signal resets! It's wild.

If the ferrite clips don't help, I might invest in better quality HDMI cables and see how that goes.

I've also noticed that USB-C cables can be prone to interference, which could be causing issues. Check this out for more insights: [USB-C Hub Madness](https://overengineer.dev/blog/2021/04/25/usb-c-hub-madness/).
