Laptop Won’t Boot Without External HDD After BIOS Reset

I've got a bit of a dilemma with my Asus x555qa laptop. It used to boot just fine from the SSD, but now it only boots when I have an external HDD connected via USB. I ran into some trouble while trying to install Linux and encountered an error saying "MOKlistRT Volume full." Following some advice, I pressed F9 to load Optimized Defaults in the BIOS. Ever since then, my laptop hangs at the logo screen unless the external HDD is plugged in. Once it loads, I can unplug it, and everything seems normal. What can I do to fix the boot issue so my laptop will start up properly using just the SSD?

Definitely try those methods! Disconnecting from AC power for a while can help reset things, so go for the second or third option. If you do that and nothing changes, it might be worth checking if there's a firmware update available for your BIOS. Good luck!

It sounds like you might need to reset the BIOS settings. Here are a few options to try:

1. Unplug the laptop from AC power, then press and hold the power button for over 30 seconds. After that, plug it back in and see if it boots.
2. Alternatively, remove the battery and let everything sit for a while (like overnight), then put it all back together and try again.
3. Another method is to disconnect the CMOS battery. Just look up how to do that for your model, and leave it disconnected for about an hour.
4. If that doesn’t work, you might want to use a Rescue disk. You can download Hirens Boot CD, create a bootable USB with it using Rufus, and see if you can reset from there.

Thanks for the tips! When you say reset the BIOS, do you mean just click the restore defaults option?

Yeah, that's what I mean! Restoring defaults usually helps with odd boot issues.
