Looking for a Beginner’s Guide to Entering the DevOps Field

Hey folks,

I'm hoping to get some guidance from those already working in DevOps or who have successfully transitioned into the field. I have a background in biomedical science, which means I'm not coming from a tech background, but I have honed my analytical and problem-solving skills. Right now, though, I'm completely new to the tech scene—I've never really coded, worked with Python, automated processes, engaged with cloud services, or used any DevOps tools.

For the past month, I've been diving into research about DevOps, and I'm super interested in making this a career path. I'm eager to learn, gain real skills, and pursue an entry-level or junior position, with the hope of growing from there.

What I'm really looking for is:

- A solid guide or learning path—like a website, a roadmap, or a structured course—that can help someone with zero knowledge build a strong foundation for employment.

Specifically:
- Are there any trusted guides or roadmaps for complete beginners?
- Can you recommend any online courses, subscriptions, platforms, or even YouTube series that are high quality?
- If you were aiming to become hireable at a junior level, what would you prioritize learning first?

I'm not looking to rush through this carelessly; I want to learn effectively and consistently, apply my knowledge hands-on, and become employable as efficiently and purposefully as possible. I'm planning on building projects and labs to demonstrate my understanding of tools and concepts, so any suggestions on resources that prepare you for actual jobs and interviews would be fantastic!

Thanks in advance for any recommendations or personal experiences, especially from those who've entered DevOps without a computer science background!

Instead of going directly for DevOps, why not break into IT or development in general? Keeping your options open might lead you to discover a role that resonates better with you as you learn more about the industry.

Here's a solid roadmap to consider:
1. Start with coding. Aim to become at least a junior developer first, then build your way up to intermediate or senior roles if possible.
2. Get familiar with sysadmin tasks to understand the infrastructure side.
3. Transition to DevOps roles after that.

Totally agree with this! But also, can anyone share specific resources or sites that helped them follow this path?

Thanks for the clarity! A roadmap like that really helps me understand the progression.

A lot ahead of you, but don’t get discouraged. Consider this roadmap for a clear path: https://roadmap.sh/devops. Just remember, DevOps requires a strong foundation in both development and sysadmin areas.

Thanks, I’ll check it out!

Focus on mastering Linux first. Being really good at it is crucial as it underpins so much of DevOps work.
