Looking for a Budget Computer to Work From Home

Hi everyone! I'm not the most tech-savvy person, so I need some help. I've been working from home with a decent laptop, but it seems like the motherboard has failed. I've been advised that fixing it would cost more than the laptop's worth, so I'm in the market for a replacement. Ideally, I'm looking for something in the $150–$250 range that can get me through the next couple of months until I can afford a better machine.

I've noticed a lot of Dell OptiPlex models pop up in my searches, but I'm not sure if they're the best option. I need something that's reliable enough for basic work tasks and everyday use. If anyone has recommendations for specific models, refurbished options, or good places to buy, I'd really appreciate it. And if there's anything else I should consider purchasing along with the computer (aside from a monitor and keyboard), that would be great. Thanks a lot!

Check out eBay for a used ThinkPad T14. You can usually find an Intel 10th gen model for around $200, which should definitely suit your needs!

Thanks for the tip! Just to clarify though, would you recommend any options if I want to connect it to my existing monitor for better screen space?

It’s interesting that you think the motherboard failed! Usually, hard drives fail more often, or sometimes RAM issues crop up. But if someone from your company IT team suggested that, they might have a better idea of what’s going on.

The IT guy mentioned it could be another part too, but I’m pretty sure he said motherboard. Just trying to figure out how to move forward!

Definitely go for a Lenovo ThinkPad T14. They’re robust and pretty accessible in the refurbished market, so you should have some good options there.

Great to know! I’m a bit concerned about screen space since I have a monitor already, so I might lean towards a desktop for more versatility. Thanks for your input!
