Looking for a Library-Style Inventory Tracker for Tech Gear

Hey everyone! My company is trying to set up a better inventory tracking system for our tech items like computers, monitors, and cables. Right now, we're using PDQ, which has been good, but I want to expand its capabilities to track more items, including various cables (by type and length). Ideally, I'd love a system where I can label everything with a serial number and easily assign it to the person using it—kind of like checking out books at a library. We're currently relying on an Excel spreadsheet but want to shift away from that. I understand there would be some manual entry at the start, but I'm hoping to find a way to automate the process after that. I found GLPI, which seems promising for cable tracking, but I'm not sure if it meets all my needs. Does anyone have suggestions or know if this kind of functionality is available in other systems?

What’s your budget looking like? You might want to explore Lansweeper as a solid upgrade option.

Right now, we’re just in the research phase without a set budget. I’m looking for good options, and Lansweeper is on my list!

Just a heads up, this is more of my initiative than a directive from the bosses, but I believe it could ease a lot of workload.

Honestly, tracking cables and peripherals can be overkill. They’re often considered consumables, and the time spent tracking might outvalue what you’re keeping track of.

Have you thought about getting some tiny RFID stickers? Pair that with a reader and maybe even enlist a summer intern to handle the checkouts. It could streamline the process a lot!

I like the idea! I was thinking that the users could scan items themselves or just come to me for help. Either way, it would beat manually updating everything.

You might want to check out Snipe-IT. It seems to handle overall inventory really well, especially the kind of mixed gear you’re dealing with. We use PDQ as well, but Snipe-IT complements it nicely by providing a broader inventory perspective. Plus, you can export data from PDQ to populate Snipe-IT, which saves a lot of hassle!

Totally agree! I've heard from others that using both PDQ and Snipe-IT works out really well for tracking everything.

I haven't used it myself, but I've spoken to quite a few people who had positive experiences with that setup.
