Looking for Advice on Building a Multi-Purpose PC

Hey everyone! I've been building and upgrading my PC since 2019, and now that I'm earning some money, I'd like to put together a new rig that will last me for a few years. I'm okay with reusing some of my existing parts like my GPU, PSU, and SSDs for now, but I want to move up to an AM5 setup. Currently, I have a 5800x3D CPU, 32GB of 3200MHz RAM, a 3080 FE GPU, and a 1000W Platinum-rated PSU.

My primary uses for the new build will be gaming and hosting a Plex server. I also like to record game clips for later review and sometimes screen share on Discord. This can really strain my current setup when I'm gaming, sharing my screen, and have 2-3 people streaming content on Plex that requires transcoding.

My budget is around $1,500 to $2,000, excluding the GPU, as I plan to hold off on upgrading that for about six months to wait for better stock and pricing on the latest GPUs. I need a motherboard with plenty of I/O options and multiple SSD slots since I tend to run out quickly. I don't need Wi-Fi but I do want to upgrade the LAN and Bluetooth capabilities. I'm considering the Ryzen 9900x or 9950x but I'm unsure if that's overkill since not all applications take advantage of more cores. I currently run dual 1440p monitors – one for gaming at 144hz and the other at 75hz for content viewing. I prefer to run games as close to max settings as possible, and while I know my GPU can be a bottleneck, I want to ensure that the rest of my components are up to par. If you need any more details, feel free to ask! Thanks in advance for your help!

You might want to consider waiting for AMD's next-gen CPUs! Since you're okay sticking with your 3080 for a bit longer, it could really save you some cash. Any idea when the next-gen might come out?

That's what I'm thinking! I'm curious about how old the current gen is and when the next one is expected to drop.

Have you looked into the 9950X3D? It's a powerhouse of a CPU, definitely worth considering if you want top performance.

Remember that a CPU with more cores helps in multitasking, but for gaming, it might not drastically improve your performance if you're already using a powerful GPU like the 3080.

Honestly, your setup is already quite solid! Instead of a full build, consider picking up a mini PC and a capture card for around $300. This way, you can offload some of the streaming tasks from your main PC and alleviate some pressure on it.

That sounds intriguing! I did put a lot of effort into my current setup, upgrading from a 2600x and RX580 to the 5800x3D for better performance in games like Tarkov. I’ll still want to record my gaming moments, but a second PC could be perfect for the Plex server while I wait for the new CPUs. Maybe I could also swap my 5800x3D with my girlfriend's 5900x for extra cores in the meantime.
