Looking for Gaming Monitor Advice: 4K vs 1080p & VA vs IPS

I'm in the market for a new gaming monitor and I'm trying to decide between a few options. Specifically, should I go for a high resolution like 4K with a lower refresh rate of 60Hz, or should I pick a lower resolution like 1080p with a much higher refresh rate of 250Hz? Also, I'm curious about the differences between VA and IPS panels. My current laptop has a refresh rate of 165Hz with a resolution of 1920x1080, and I'm looking for a noticeable upgrade. Any suggestions?

I once built a PC with an RTX 2080 Super and tried gaming on a 4K TV. The experience was disappointing due to the low refresh rate. I ended up switching to a 27" 1080p monitor with 144Hz, and that setup has been perfect for running most games at high settings. A 4K monitor might impress at first, but you might get used to it. Just be mindful that it could make your GPU feel a bit outdated as new games are released.

I'd recommend aiming for a 1440p monitor with a 120Hz refresh rate. IPS panels are great for vibrant colors and quick response times, making them perfect for gaming and creative tasks. VA panels have better contrast and deep blacks, which can make movies look fantastic. If you want the best colors and speed, go for IPS, but if you prefer deeper contrast, VA could be a good fit too.

I absolutely love my 32x9 240Hz 5120x1440 monitor for fast-paced shooters. However, for slower or strategic games, I'd prioritize resolution over refresh rate. Generally, anything above 120Hz is bearable, but I wouldn’t want anything less for smooth gameplay.

If you're looking for excellent resolution, definitely consider a 4K monitor! But you can find options that exceed 60Hz now. If competitive gaming is your focus, then a low-res 1080p at 250Hz is a solid choice for performance.

Thanks! What about a 1440p at 165/250Hz?

What type of games do you typically play, and what's your setup? I’d definitely suggest 1440p over 1080p. For your RTX 4060 and a budget around $300, there are some solid options out there!

I play both multiplayer games like Marvel Rivals and single-player games like Expedition 33 and Souls games.
