Looking for Guidance to Start a Career in DevOps

Hi everyone! I recently got laid off from my job at a consultancy and have until March for my notice period to end. With my father retiring soon, I'm in a bit of a tight spot and need to find work fast. I have 2 years of experience in RPA (using Automation Anywhere), but I'm considering a shift to DevOps or another viable field. I'm really looking for advice on how to kickstart a career in DevOps from someone experienced in this area. I've been feeling overwhelmed and, honestly, I've been struggling with some heavy thoughts lately. I didn't want to burden my family with this, but I could really use some support and guidance on how to move forward. Thank you!

First off, it's crucial to take care of your mental health. Don't rush into a new career just out of desperation. It's important to seek support from trusted friends or professionals first. Remember, your life is more important than any job. If you're thinking about DevOps, make sure you're aware that it's not an entry-level role – it requires strong systems thinking and responsibilities. Given your background in RPA, you have a solid foundation! Start learning Linux, networking, Git, and one cloud provider. These skills will help you transition into roles related to platform tooling or SRE. Just take your time and build on what you currently know. Focus on getting stable income first, then gradually make that switch.

I can't help with your emotional struggles, but I can suggest that transitioning to a new job while you're still employed is much easier. While it's great to learn tools online, it won't guarantee you a job right away. Focus on leveraging your current network to find new opportunities first, and then gradually work on transitioning to DevOps.
