Hey everyone! I have a 4-year-old HP Pavilion gaming laptop equipped with a Ryzen 5 4600H and a 1650ti graphics card. I'm eager to switch to Linux but need some guidance on choosing the right distribution. Here's what I typically do on my Windows laptop:
- Watch movies frequently, usually with Chrome or Edge
- Run Java and Selenium automation testing suites
- Do quite a bit of work with Python
- Use Excel and Word
- Play Valorant
Given these needs, which Linux distro would be the best fit for me? I have a bit of experience with Ubuntu from college, but I mostly just used the UI and didn't interact with the terminal much.

If you want something that requires minimal maintenance, you should definitely consider Linux Mint. It's user-friendly and great for beginners!
You might want to consider dual booting or running one OS in a virtual machine while using another for your gaming and professional work. Linux Mint is a popular choice for beginners – it's stable, secure, and well-supported. You could also try Ubuntu, as it tends to be pretty versatile as well. Best of luck with your transition!
I've got some experience with Ubuntu. Is there anything specific to watch out for?
And will running Java and Python work smoothly with Selenium on Linux?
Keep in mind that only online versions of Excel and Word are available on Linux. Plus, Valorant doesn't run on Linux because of the anti-cheat system. You'll likely need to dual boot if you want to use the desktop versions of Office and also play Valorant.
Wow, that sounds like a hassle!

Is Mint well supported when it comes to drivers and stuff?
