Looking for Long-lasting Desktop PC Build: AM5 vs. Intel i3 14th Gen?

Hey all! I'm on a mission to build a desktop PC that's going to last me a decade, and my budget is around $400. Currently, I'm using a Ryzen 5700U laptop, but it's mostly stationary at home. I'd like my new PC to handle office tasks like managing multiple tabs, PDFs, spreadsheets, slides, and video calls without a hitch. I'm not interested in gaming—I've got a Series X for that—and I won't be upgrading with a GPU anytime soon.

I've heard mixed reviews about CPUs: AMD is said to be more cost-effective while Intel might perform better for everyday tasks. I'm curious which route to take: should I invest in an AM5 motherboard for potential upgrades down the line, or is the Intel i3 14100 good enough for my needs if I'm not planning on upgrading? I'm looking at two possible builds: one with the AMD 8500G and another with the Intel i3 14100. Would going for the AM5 setup truly make a difference in 7-8 years, especially for the tasks I typically do? Any advice would be super helpful!

Budget-wise and for simple office work, the i3 is adequate if you don’t care about future upgrades. But if you're definitely aiming for longevity, go with AM5. Remember to keep your system and files safe with regular backups!

Honestly, 10 years is a long time in tech. By that point, the difference in performance between the two might not matter much. Just focus on getting a reliable system now and make sure to back up your important files regularly!

If gaming isn't in your plans, the second build should work perfectly fine for your needs! You could consider a MiniPC too if you're open to that option; they’re compact and handle office tasks really well.

MiniPCs are super handy! If you're juggling home and some travel, it might be a convenient choice.

Definitely go with the AM5. The 8500G is a more powerful CPU compared to the i3 14100 and it gives you room to upgrade in the future, which is a big plus. Plus, having a better integrated GPU means it'll handle your office tasks more smoothly.

Agreed! Plus, with future Ryzen CPUs on AM5, you’ll have better options down the line if you want to upgrade your CPU.

I’d suggest leaning towards the AMD build. Keep in mind that the i3 14100 is on a dead-end platform, while the AM5 will allow for better upgrades down the road if you decide to boost your performance later.
