Looking for PC Building Advice After 10 Years Off

I'm considering building a new PC since my current one is about 9 years old and is starting to feel sluggish—especially for development tasks. I haven't kept up with tech and part research for over a decade, so I'm starting from scratch. I'm looking for suggestions on good parts or places to start my research. Do you think I should build now given the current RAM prices, or should I wait 2-3 years? I mainly use my PC for app and web development (like Android and iOS app dev, using emulators and containers) and casual gaming (mostly Dota 2, Terraria, Minecraft, and Battlefront 2). I don't need cutting-edge graphics, but I'd like to do some development work. I have a budget of up to $2,000, but I'd prefer to stick to around $1,000 to $1,500. Just for context, my last build was only $870, back when parts were much cheaper!

Building a PC now isn’t ideal. Prices are high for good components, not to mention the latest technology has become outrageously expensive. A modest CPU and decent RAM can eat up a huge chunk of your budget. If I were you, I'd seriously consider buying a prebuilt machine. You might get a better deal. I just bought a prebuilt with great specs for $2400, and it included everything I needed!

Thanks, that’s really helpful! I'm considering reusing some of my old parts, like the case and fans, which might save me a bit. But wow, things have changed since I built my last one!

You might be better off getting a prebuilt with something like a 5070 or 5070ti. I had a similar situation and opted for a prebuilt due to the inflate pricing for parts. It saved me a lot, and the quality isn’t as bad as people say—especially for casual use.

I was skeptical, but if I'm looking for longevity, it might be the best option. Plus, I wouldn't mind getting a Mac for development work; it seems like older models are still reasonably priced.

If you can, check out a local Microcenter. They often have great in-store bundle deals and their sales staff really know their stuff. My friend bought a whole new setup there for a good price last month!

Definitely worth it! When I last built, I ran into issues because my motherboard was too outdated to take new parts. Now it's hard to upgrade without investing a lot.

Honestly, $2k might cover just the RAM and GPU these days. It’s a tough market right now! If you're budget-conscious, I'd suggest checking out Logical Increments. You can select a price point and see a curated list of parts.

Yeah, but I feel like their prices need updating; it's kind of a mess out there right now.
