Hey everyone! I'm considering upgrading my PC and possibly building a new one. Last summer, I invested over $2,000 in a MacBook M4 Pro with a 14-core CPU, a 20-core GPU, 24GB of unified memory, and a 1TB SSD. I'm debating whether spending another $2,000 (or even less) on a desktop PC is justified. A bit about me: I'm a college student with a steady job where I edit videos for clients and snap photos for events. My income is decent, but I'm cautious about overspending since I have rent to cover.
I've had my current computer for 6 years, and while I do a lot of editing work, I also enjoy some gaming, mainly GTA 5 and Cyberpunk. Here are my current specs:
- CPU: Intel i7 9700KF
- GPU: EVGA NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 2070 SUPER
- RAM: G.SKILL 4400C 16GTRS DD4 X 2 (32GB total)
- Storage: 512GB SSD and 4TB HDD
I'm looking for advice on specs for a new PC that would handle editing well and allow for occasional gaming. Ideally, I'm hoping to stay within a budget of $1,200 to $1,500, with a maximum of $2,000, but I'd love to hear about budget builds in the $700 to $1,000 range as well. I've heard that RAM prices are pretty steep these days.

If you upgrade your CPU, motherboard, and RAM, your new setup would likely outperform your MacBook for both editing and gaming tasks. Are you currently gaming at 1080p?
I've heard people say that the Adobe suite tends to run smoother on macOS than on Windows. What features or performance are you hoping to achieve with a PC that your MacBook isn’t providing?
If you have a Micro Center nearby, check out their bundles. You can upgrade your motherboard, CPU, and RAM for around your budget. For instance, you might consider the AMD Ryzen 9 with a compatible motherboard and good RAM. If gaming in 1440p or 4K isn’t a priority, you can hold onto your 2070 Super for now and it should still meet your needs.
