I'm in search of a straightforward image management solution as I'm feeling overwhelmed by the numerous Digital Asset Management (DAM) options, photo organizers, hosting services, and CDNs out there. We have a few hundred products, each featuring several images, alongside various marketing materials that are primarily photographs of people using our products. Currently, everything is stored in a couple of S3 buckets, which makes managing assets a cumbersome task.
I want to establish a centralized location where our marketing team can easily access these assets. Key features I'm looking for include flexible tagging, AI-assisted captioning and tagging, resizing and cropping tools, and robust search capabilities. Additionally, it would be beneficial to have an easy-to-use API for integrating with our product management application, making it simpler to browse and select images.
We're currently testing imgix for CDN delivery and found it satisfactory. My preference is a self-hosted solution that can evolve with our needs, especially since we're exploring AI-generated images for our content. However, I'm open to SaaS solutions as long as they remain user-friendly and not too intrusive.

You might want to check out Cloudinary. I've been using it for a couple of years, and it's pretty solid for your needs. Their free tier is decent for starting out. For a self-hosted alternative, Directus has a functional Digital Asset Management system with flexible metadata and tagging. If you're looking for something more enterprise-focused, Pimcore could work, but it might be overkill. Additionally, ResourceSpace is a lightweight open-source option that's good for tagging and metadata, though its UI isn’t the prettiest.
Have you considered using PhotoPrism or Immich? They're both simple self-hosted solutions that come with auto-tagging features. If you need a bit more structure for your product images, pairing Directus with your S3 setup could be a great option; it also gives you a handy API for your app.
The choice really depends on whether you need a centralized image repository that won’t change much or one that will grow rapidly and rely on editing tools like Photoshop. In our case, we needed a robust system to handle a vast library, and none of the online-only DAM solutions we tried were worth the effort or expense.
