Hey everyone! I just landed a job as a software developer, and I'm in the market for a new laptop that I can rely on for the next few years. My work demands that I constantly run multiple Docker containers and compile code regularly. I'm really looking for a laptop that has a great keyboard for typing, good thermal management (I don't want it overheating except during very heavy use), and ideally a 16" screen with high resolution and quality. I'm thinking 32GB of RAM is essential since I believe 16GB just won't cut it moving forward. Also, I'm not a macOS fan, so I'm definitely leaning towards a Windows machine, with a potential switch to Linux later on. My budget is around £1.4k, and my employer is willing to cover 1/3 of the cost as long as they can claim back the VAT, so I'd prefer a new laptop. I'd appreciate any recommendations since this is a significant investment for me. Thanks in advance!

It sounds like you have specific needs for your laptop! Since you want Windows and at least 32GB of RAM, you might want to check out the Lenovo ThinkPad P16s. It's a solid option known for its durability and typing experience. The thermal management should help keep it cool even under pressure. Just make sure to look for deals to stay within your budget!
Just a heads up, finding a 32GB Windows laptop within your budget might be tricky, but you could consider looking into custom Linux laptops. Some brands offer flexible configurations that might meet your specs.
Have you thought about a desktop? They typically offer better ergonomics for coding. But I get that you need something portable for your job, especially since it’s hybrid. Just curious if that's an option for you!
I actually built a desktop last year! But I need a laptop for office visits and travel.
That's a great suggestion! I’ve heard good things about the ThinkPad series for developers.
