Hey everyone! I've been using a pre-built PC since 2018, and I'm starting to notice it's struggling with newer games I want to play. Here are my current specs: Intel Core i7-8700 CPU, NVIDIA RTX 2080 GPU, 32GB DDR4 RAM, MSI Z370-A Pro motherboard, and 1TB SSD plus a 1TB HDD for storage. I have a Corsair AIO water cooler and 7 case fans as well. While it handles most games decently, newer titles like Oblivion Remastered, Monster Hunter Wilds, and Ark Survival Ascended are becoming a challenge, especially on higher settings. I'm hoping to get some advice on whether I should upgrade specific components or if it's time to consider a full platform rebuild!

Honestly, there isn't much of a viable upgrade path for your current setup. You'd likely need to replace the CPU, GPU, motherboard, and probably RAM too. At that point, you’re almost better off just selling your current PC and building a new one.
If you can swing it, upgrading to something like a 7800X3D or 9800X3D with a compatible motherboard and DDR5 RAM would be great, costing about $700-$800. For the GPU, consider the 7900 XT or 5070 Ti for solid performance. You can reuse most of your other components like your cooler and case.
What’s your budget looking like for an upgrade? That could really help narrow down the options you have!
I’m thinking within $1,000 or whatever I need to spend to get back to playing games well.
I recently upgraded too! I switched from a 6700K to a 13700K and replaced almost everything else, like RAM and the motherboard. I bought a bundle from Newegg which included everything, so it all works together seamlessly. You might want to check for similar bundles; it’s a great way to upgrade.
That's a great idea! I’ll look into those bundles and might just stick with the 2080 for now until I can afford a better GPU.
Seven years is a solid lifespan for your setup! Some minor upgrades might extend its life, but you’ll likely just face similar issues in a few years. Save up for a full rebuild but if you’re eager, a new GPU now will help in the meantime. Just remember that your CPU and DDR4 could limit your future options.
That sounds like a solid plan! I got this PC as a gift, so I’ve been hesitant to upgrade, but it sounds like I might need to.
