Hey everyone! We're gearing up to repurpose our bare metal servers to host our own private cloud. Previously, we were using VMware ESXi, but now we're on the hunt for alternative options. I've checked out Hypervisor, but it's quite pricey, and Proxmox is on my radar as an open-source solution. If anyone has insights on a virtualization platform that offers a perpetual license rather than a subscription model, I'd really appreciate your recommendations! Thanks a bunch!

Proxmox is definitely worth considering. A lot of folks have had success with it, especially if you have a small setup.
Most ESXi users I've assisted have successfully transitioned to Proxmox without any hiccups. It's especially effective for smaller environments with a few hosts. Just make sure to read up on best practices, especially if you're running Windows VMs alongside!
You might also want to look at XCP-ng or Nutanix. Just pick whatever fits within your budget and skillset. It's all about testing and learning what's best for your setup before you make the move!
KVM has worked really well for my team at the institution. We use Ansible scripts to deploy VMs, and it’s been going smoothly. Definitely worth checking out if you don't mind diving into more Linux-based solutions.
If you're operating mainly in a Windows environment, I'd suggest Hyper-V. It's pretty user-friendly if you’re already familiar with Windows services. Just be aware, if you do go this route, avoid using Storage Spaces Direct!

I’ve been using Hyper-V since 2008, and I can confidently say I haven't looked back! It’s been solid for us.
