Looking to Upgrade My CPU but Keep My Old RAM—What’s the Best Strategy?

I'm currently using an i7-8700k and 32GB of DDR4-2133 RAM. While I'm not in a hurry to upgrade, I've been noticing performance issues with gaming, and I feel like I'm nearing the point where an upgrade is necessary. With RAM prices being what they are, I want a cost-effective strategy that allows me to future-proof my system. I'm considering getting an i7-14700k since there are older motherboards that still support DDR4, allowing me to save up and upgrade my RAM and motherboard later when prices drop. Does this sound like a solid plan, or do you have better suggestions?

Double-check if your RAM is actually rated for 2133 or if it just needs an XMP profile to run faster. You can download CPU-Z to see what each stick is capable of. You might find you're able to boost performance just by adjusting settings.

Thanks for the tip! It turns out my RAM is rated for 3000, but it's running at 2133. Any suggestions on how I can optimize the RAM while I figure this upgrade out?

Yeah, this is a common issue! Make sure to check those settings; you might be able to get a nice performance boost without changing anything else.

Going for the i7-14700k is a smart idea, but I'd recommend getting a Z-series motherboard over a B-series for better settings management and future upgrades.

Any specific Z-series motherboard you'd suggest for this setup?

Upgrading to the i7-14700k sounds like a decent plan, but keep in mind that DDR4-2133 is quite slow, which can limit performance, especially on newer platforms. DDR5 is getting more affordable, so it might be worth reconsidering a DDR5 setup if you're looking for longevity.

I didn't realize RAM speed could affect CPU performance significantly. Can you explain how that works more?

Man, I miss the days when RAM prices were under $3/GB. Things were so much easier then!

You also have some solid alternatives like the 5800XT or Ryzen 7 series. A B550 motherboard paired with the 5800XT could give you a good performance boost without breaking the bank. Just remember, with your current setup, any upgrade will be a big step up from the 8700k!

What are the specific advantages of going with the 5800XT over the 14700k besides just price? The performance benchmarks make the i7 look way better.

Your approach isn't bad, but honestly, 2133MHz DDR4 is pretty low. You might want to consider getting a faster RAM kit while they are still reasonably priced, even if it’s not a full upgrade right now.

I get your point about the RAM, but I'm more inclined to wait and make a bigger upgrade down the line when better options appear.
