Hey everyone! I've been having an issue with my PC lately where the fans rev up and the screen goes black during gameplay, forcing me to hard reset it. I thought the PSU was to blame, so I replaced it, but unfortunately, the problem persists. Right now, I can only watch YouTube or play Backgammon online, which isn't what I want. It seems like I need to upgrade my GPU, and I'm also considering getting a new CPU.
Here's my current setup:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600
- Motherboard: ASUS Prime B450M-K
- GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER 6G
- RAM: 16GB (2x Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200Mhz DDR4)
- New PSU: Thermaltake Toughpower GF A3 650W 80+ Gold
- Monitor: ASUS TUF Gaming VG259QM 24.5"
I'm eyeing an upgrade to an RTX 4060 and possibly a Ryzen 5 9600X, along with the ASUS TUF B-650 Plus motherboard. However, my budget is pretty tight, so I'm hoping for suggestions around the same price point. Also, I'm not a native English speaker, so I apologize for any mistakes. Appreciate any guidance you can provide!

The fan issue usually points to a temp problem. So, did you check your components' temperatures before the crashes? It's crucial to ensure they're managed properly. Maybe after cleaning, the temperatures were better?
Your current motherboard isn't the best fit for high-performance CPUs, especially 8-core ones, plus it lacks some modern features. If your budget allows, consider a new AM5 motherboard with a Ryzen 5 9600X or maybe an Intel i5-13400F for better performance with your GPU upgrade plan. Just be careful with compatibility!
First things first, have you updated your GPU drivers? Outdated drivers can cause performance issues. Also, temperature checks are essential since high temps can trigger fan speeds and crashes. Before the blackouts, what were your CPU and GPU temps? Maybe that’s part of the problem!
Thanks for the tip! My drivers are up to date. I tried running my game in window mode to test things and temps were decent, about 66°C for the CPU and 50°C for the GPU during the crash.
I built my PC under $700 too, and it's performing great! My setup is Ryzen 3600, a B550 motherboard, 32GB of RAM, and an RX 6600 with a solid power supply. If you're on a budget, consider similar parts to keep costs down but still get good performance!
Yeah, after cleaning the dust, I saw a bit of improvement! Still, the CPU hit 78°C for a bit during gaming, which seemed high. The newer PSU helped too!
