I've been thinking about upgrading my PC, which I've had for about 6 years. The only upgrade I've done so far is to swap out the RAM when it stopped working. Recently, I've noticed my CPU is really holding me back during gaming sessions, and I'm planning to replace it. However, I'm not sure if I need to upgrade anything else besides the CPU. Here are my current specs:
- GPU: 2060 Super
- CPU: i5-9600k
- Motherboard: ASROCK Z390 Phantom Gaming AS/ac
- Power Supply: Apex Gaming AX-550
Any advice would be greatly appreciated since I'm tired of experiencing lag while gaming!

Yes, definitely a new CPU would help, especially with newer games. If you haven’t done a clean install of Windows in those 6 years, that might also improve performance. For upgrades, I'd recommend a Ryzen 5 7500F or 7600X, paired with a B650 motherboard and around 32GB of DDR5-6000 memory, which should cost about $400. There are some great build guides on YouTube from channels like LTT and Paul’s Hardware to help you through the process. Feel free to ask more questions here too!
Honestly, considering your hardware is a bit dated, I would recommend looking into a full upgrade. What’s your budget looking like?
I want to keep it low but can stretch to about $1000 if necessary.
What do you mean by a clean Windows install?
