Managing User-Specific Desktop Shortcuts with OneDrive Backup

Hi everyone! I'm dealing with a tricky situation regarding desktop shortcuts in our hybrid setup. A little backstory: a while back, we had a user who overloaded their desktop with files, which led to a hard drive failure and significant data loss. To prevent that, we set up Desktop Folder redirection to backup to OneDrive. However, we're running into issues with desktop shortcuts for specific users. When we push shortcuts via GPO, they get backed up to OneDrive, and if users log in again, it creates duplicate shortcuts. I've tried disabling backup for .urls and .lnks to fix this, but it also prevents user-created shortcuts from syncing properly. I've experimented with using Intune and PowerShell scripts to deploy shortcuts, but sometimes timing issues with OneDrive cause it to push duplicates. I'm looking for suggestions on how to handle this situation effectively while ensuring that each user only has the necessary shortcuts. Any help would really be appreciated!

Honestly, this sounds like a tricky issue! From what I've encountered, it might be easier to let users create their own unique shortcuts when needed rather than trying to manage them all from a central point. Plus, that way they'd only have shortcuts they actually need.

I've been thinking about using PowerAutomate for this situation. You could set it up to check a user’s desktop every minute for any shortcuts, then compare and create the necessary files in OneDrive only if they're missing. It seems like it could streamline the process pretty well!

In our transition to OneDrive, we moved all shortcuts into the Favorites folder in Edge. It keeps things tidy and helps users access pertinent links without cluttering their desktop. Did you face any pushback from users having to click through Edge to get to their favorites?
