My Laptop is Clicking and Acting Weird – What Could Be Wrong?

I've got a Lenovo Ideapad S145-15iwl that I've been using since 2024, though it was given to me, so it's probably around 3-4 years old now. I mainly use it for schoolwork and some light gaming, and it usually just sits on my desk. Recently, I've noticed that it's been clicking on its own—like, even when the mouse is unplugged. It happens randomly; for example, while I'm watching videos, the playback pauses, while I'm reading, a tab minimizes, and during gaming, it opens the Windows search. It started about a week ago, and I did have a slight incident a couple of months ago where someone knocked the back of the laptop onto the floor, which cracked the back cover and caused a screw to go missing, but it's still functioning fine otherwise. I've cleaned it out as best I could and put everything back together, and there doesn't seem to be anything loose inside. Also, the keyboard (which I've been using) has seen better days—some keys are a bit stiff, and I never liked using the touchpad because it's been pretty unreliable. I'm just not sure what's causing all these strange clicks and actions. Any ideas?

It sounds like the touch screen might be malfunctioning if it's damaged. I’d suggest connecting an external mouse, then disable both the touchpad and the touch screen to see if the clicking stops. You can enable one at a time to isolate the problem. Let me know if that helps!

I tried using my external mouse but it didn't fix the issue. Just turned off the touchpad, and so far, no clicks!

Honestly, the clicking sounds kind of odd for a hardware issue, especially with it minimizing tabs and pausing videos. I'd recommend running an ESET Online Scan to check for software issues because something might be triggering those actions. Could be malware or something benign causing chaos.

I think the fall might have caused some damage I've overlooked, but I'll run the scan to be sure and disable the touchpad for now.
