My Laptop Keeps Displaying Incorrect Date and Time – Can I Fix It with Software?

I've been having this issue with my laptop where every time I start it, the date and time shows up as 2119-1-1 00:00. After about an hour, it eventually syncs to the correct year, 2025, but sometimes the month or day is still off. I find that if I go into the date and time settings and toggle the automatic time feature off and back on, it corrects itself right away. I suspect this might be due to a dead CMOS battery since the laptop has been sitting at 0% charge for a few months. I'd prefer to try software solutions first before opening up the laptop, which isn't easy. Can anyone enlighten me on:
* Is there a software fix for this or a way to automate it using Python or batch script?
* Why does the time take so long to sync after startup? Shouldn't it sync right away if I have WiFi?
* What could be causing the bizarre 2119-1-1 00:00 display? Is it some sort of special binary value?

When your laptop doesn’t sync the time immediately after you start it, it usually indicates that it’s still initializing or hasn’t established a solid internet connection yet. Toggling the settings might prompt it to refresh sooner. Unfortunately, until the CMOS battery is changed, you might be stuck with these inconsistencies.

It sounds like you've got a dead CMOS battery. Windows can’t sync the time until it's connected to the internet, and that may take a while if the battery isn't holding the time settings properly. While there's no perfect software solution, you could set up a script to sync the time when you start your laptop as a workaround.

Just to clarify, the CMOS battery is separate from the main battery of your laptop; it’s a small button battery on the motherboard that keeps the date and time when the laptop is off. If that battery is dead, your time won't be saved properly, so you're going to need to swap it out. Some laptops are easier to open than others, so make sure to check the manual if you decide to go that route.
