My Linux System Is Lagging Every Second—What’s Wrong?

Hey everyone, I'm having a frustrating issue with my Linux Mint 22.1 (Cinnamon) setup. Since yesterday, my system has been lagging sporadically. It feels like there's a pause of about 0.12 seconds every second or so, affecting everything from mouse movement to typing, and even video playback. I've tried using Timeshift to roll back changes, switching my NVIDIA settings to performance mode, and restarting my system, but nothing seems to help. I'm pretty new to Linux, so any guidance would be appreciated!

Have you checked whether you're using X11 or Wayland? That can sometimes impact performance. Also, do you have any apps running in the background while this is happening? It's worth checking if the lag is persistent or just occasional.

I'm using X11. It's a full install, not from a USB stick, and it lags from boot even with all startup apps turned off.

You might want to check your memory settings as well. Are you familiar with swap memory, zram, or zswap? Enabling zram or zswap can help with system performance if your RAM is getting full. If you haven't set up swap space, that could also be causing the lags you're experiencing.

It sounds like there might be some hardware-related issues at play. Make sure your motherboard (MPG X570 GAMING EDGE WIFI) is updated and check your storage setup—are you using just one internal SSD or do you have more drives connected? Sometimes having multiple drives can affect system performance if not managed properly.
