My MacBook Screen Went Black After Using a Damp Charger – What Should I Do?

I own a MacBook, which I rely on for everything in my daily life. Earlier today, my charger got a bit damp, but I thought it would be fine after letting it dry for about six hours. I plugged it into my MacBook and everything seemed okay for about ten minutes, but then suddenly my screen went black while I was watching a video! The audio cut out first, and then just like that, the screen was completely off.

I quickly unplugged it and tried to turn it back on, but it's unresponsive—no sounds, no lights, nothing. Right now, I've left it open to dry and I'm hoping it will work again by morning. But I'm really scared that I've ruined it and I can't afford to buy a new one. Is there a way to fix this? Any suggestions on what went wrong?

No need to worry too much just yet! It's likely just your charger malfunctioning. If the charger got wet, it could’ve shut down to protect itself. Try using a working charger from someone else and see if your MacBook powers back up—it might just need that juice!

I get what you're feeling. It’s frustrating! Try pressing and holding the power button for 10-15 seconds. Sometimes that can reset it if it’s not responding. Also, check to see if you still have any battery left—maybe it ran out after the charger failed.

This is a tough situation. Be sure to remember the importance of backups; it can save you a lot of heartache! Besides replacing the charger, if it's the main voltage rail that shorted, a quick visit to a repair shop could help—especially if there’s a blown fuse. They might fix it for a reasonable price and keep your data intact.

Just to add, definitely don’t reuse that charger; it’s toast! Trying another charger could help, and if it’s a fuse issue, they can fix that easily. If it’s more serious, you might need to consider data recovery services if your SSD is soldered.

It sounds like your charger might have died when it got wet. That could explain why your MacBook went black after only 10 minutes; it was likely running on battery until it drained. First, check if the charger is still working—if you have another charger, try that. If it turns on with a new charger, you’re in luck! If not, you might have a fried battery, which is cheaper to replace than buying a whole new computer. Worst case, if the motherboard is fried, data recovery might be possible. Just take a deep breath and try not to panic!
