My new SSD isn’t showing any storage space—what’s going on?

I just got a Samsung 990 Evo Plus 2TB SSD and I'm trying to use it with a USB-C enclosure (LC-power LC-m2-c-multi-2) connected to my Razer Blade 14 from 2021 running Windows 11. Although the SSD shows up in Disk Management and Explorer, it's not displaying any size. Samsung Magician doesn't recognize it, either. I even booted into Linux using a Rescuezilla USB stick to clone my internal drive, but it's showing 0B capacity. I tried using a different USB-C enclosure from Orico, but I got the same results in Windows. Is this because the SSD is unformatted? Should I be concerned? Can I still clone my internal drive onto it?

It sounds like your SSD isn't initialized or formatted yet, which is totally normal for brand-new drives. Go to Disk Management in Windows; if you see it listed as 'unallocated,' you'll need to initialize it first by right-clicking and selecting 'Initialize Disk.' After that, you can create a partition and format it. You won't be able to clone your internal drive to it until that's sorted. Seeing 0B capacity might also indicate a compatibility issue with the enclosure or driver, but since you've tried two different enclosures, it's most likely just uninitialized. Let us know how it goes with initializing it! It could be a compatibility issue too, but that's rarer.

I see what you mean, that does sound odd. Sometimes Windows can be finicky with how it displays drives. Have you tried reconnecting the SSD or checking for any Windows updates? It might help the system recognize it properly.

When I checked Disk Management, the SSD appears at the bottom of the list but not in the main section at the top. Right-clicking it only gives me options for 'change drive letter and paths,' a greyed out 'eject,' 'properties,' and 'help.' There's no option to initialize. I never saw a popup for that either.
