My PC Keeps Restarting While Gaming—Is it Overheating or a Power Supply Issue?

I've been experiencing random restarts while gaming, and I suspect it might be due to my CPU temperatures hitting around 90°C, which feels really high for my Ryzen 5 3600. I'm concerned that it might be overheating and causing a thermal shutdown. Alternatively, it could be a power supply issue—maybe it's not providing enough stable power when I'm under load. Outside of gaming, everything runs smoothly; I haven't seen any restarts while just browsing or watching videos. I haven't made any recent hardware changes either. Does anyone have suggestions on how to troubleshoot this? Would repasting the CPU or checking the PSU voltages be a good idea? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Yeah, that overheating could definitely be causing your system to restart. Even if your thermal paste isn’t the issue, it's worth checking that out. There could be other factors contributing to the high temps, so keep an eye on that.

It's definitely likely that CPU overheating is triggering those shutdowns. Use tools like HWiNFO or HWMonitor to keep tabs on your CPU temps and power draw. Reapplying some fresh thermal paste could also help!

First things first, you need to tackle that CPU temp; 90°C is way too high and definitely not ideal for gaming. Overheating is most likely the culprit here!

What should the temperature be while gaming?

In my experience, similar issues have often been linked to problems with the GPU—especially if it's an AMD card. Keep that in mind as you're troubleshooting your setup.

I recommend checking the Event Viewer under Windows Logs -> System to see if any errors pop up around the time your PC restarts. It might help identify the issue for you.

Make sure to inspect your cooling solution. I recently had to deal with an AIO cooler where the impeller failed, causing high spikes in temp—even though everything looked fine in Windows!
