I built a new PC about five months ago, and everything was working perfectly until yesterday when it just wouldn't turn on. There are no lights, no fans, nothing at all. I first thought it might be the power supply, so I bought a new one and replaced it, ensuring all cables are securely connected.
The only thing that's different is that the lights on the graphics card power connectors aren't on, even when the PC is off. The only sign of life is a button on the back labeled BIOS that lights up white when pressed and flashes when held down. I also tried removing the CMOS battery, but I'm not very experienced with that, and I struggled to get it out. Is there anything else I can check, or should I prepare for a new motherboard already?
For reference, here are my specs:
- Motherboard: MSI MPG X870E Carbon Wifi
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 7900x3D
- GPU: RTX 2080 Ti
- RAM: Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR5 64GB (2x32GB)
- PSU: Corsair RM1200X
- Storage: Samsung 990 PRO 4TB & 1TB

First, check your motherboard manual for any LED indicators that might show what’s wrong. If you have spare parts, consider testing them on a different motherboard or swapping them out to see if something else is causing the issue.
This really sounds like a GPU problem. Normally, the lights near the power connectors would light up unless there’s a bigger issue at play. If it’s the motherboard, those lights might still turn on. Have you tried booting the PC without the GPU, using the onboard graphics instead?
