My SSD is Locked in Read-Only Mode and My PC is Crashing! What Should I Do?

I've been dealing with crashing issues on my PC for about a month. I could usually restart and carry on, but two days ago, it started showing constant BSOD errors. The crashing got worse, and now it only shows a black screen on boot. Recovery options just error out, and I can't run sfc /scannow or restore the Windows image. I tried booting from a USB with Windows, but that didn't work either. I even updated my motherboard BIOS thinking that might help, but no luck. When I ran chkdsk, it came back with a read-only error and found issues with the disk. I'm using a 1TB SSD with Windows 11, and the message indicated the drive is write-protected. My setup includes an MPG Z790 CARBON MAX WIFI II motherboard with an Intel i9-14900K CPU and 64GB of RAM. I don't have access to another computer, and my only options are the command prompt and BIOS settings. What can I do?

It sounds like your SSD might be failing, especially since it's locking itself in read-only mode to prevent data loss. If that's the case, you’d need a new SSD soon. You might be able to clone your current SSD onto a new one with the help of someone experienced. If not, you'll have to install Windows on the new SSD and then try to recover your files from the old one later. I’d recommend backing up what you can, if possible!

Yeah, it’s a sad situation if that’s the case. I had a similar issue, and cloning saved me a lot of hassle. Good luck!

Your motherboard and CPU are solid, but if the SSD is giving you trouble, that sounds like the real culprit. If you can still access command prompt, try checking the disk with some commands or even formatting it if recovery isn’t critical. But keep in mind you might lose data doing that!

If you can't boot from a USB, that suggests a hardware issue with your SSD or other components. Definitely check if the SSD is showing any signs of physical damage. Try running CrystalDiskInfo to see what condition the SSD is in. It might give you more insight if you're not completely locked out yet.

CrystalDiskInfo can really help! Make sure you get a good read on the drive's health.
