Need Advice on Buying a Secondhand PC That’s Upgradeable

Hey everyone! I'm in a bit of a bind with my budget for a new PC, and I'm considering buying a secondhand one instead. I'm looking for something that will be a decent upgrade from my current setup and also has some upgrade potential for the future. Right now, I've got an i7-7700, a 1080Ti, and 16GB of DDR3 RAM (storage isn't a concern since I already have a good SSD).

I've found some secondhand desktops with Ryzen 5 5600x or Ryzen 7 5700x/5800x processors and a 3070, along with 16-32GB of DDR4 RAM for around $1000 AUD.

I have a couple of questions:
1. Is it worth waiting for the 5800x, or are the 5600x and 5700x good enough for gaming? I mostly play Warhammer 3: Total War and single-player RPGs. The processor is key for me since WH3 is quite processor-bound.
2. I was thinking about selling the 3070 to help cover some costs and using my 1080Ti instead. Will that be a bad move? I know it depends on the motherboard, but the 3070 doesn't seem to offer a massive upgrade over the 1080Ti so it feels like selling it might just lead to needing a new card in a year or two anyway.

Thanks for any help!

Spending $1000 on a secondhand PC is fair, especially if it has the 5800x and 3070 combo, but keep in mind that the 3070 isn't a huge upgrade over your 1080Ti. I suggest considering upgrading your current setup instead. You could sell your 1080Ti for about $250, grab a Ryzen 7600, and move to the AM5 platform. If you find a good deal on a 9060xt or a 9070xt, that could really boost performance for you!

That sounds like a solid plan! But I’m starting to think about just building a whole new PC since mine's pretty old, is that a better route?

The Ryzen 5600x and 5800x perform pretty similarly in gaming. Unless you're doing heavy multitasking or specific tasks that benefit from an extra core, the 5800x isn't really necessary for gaming. So if your main focus is gaming, the 5600x will do just fine!

Yeah, I get that! I’ve also heard the difference isn't huge for gaming, but what about performance in other tasks?
