I've been dealing with some teasing from my friend about my PC for a while now, and I could really use some advice. I'm not very tech-savvy, so any insights would be appreciated! My PC is about 8 years old, and I recently found a cobweb in it—who knows how long that's been there! I had an overheating problem, but since I took off the side panel, it seems to be running better. However, my friend told me this could restrict airflow. On top of that, I had issues with my headphones that turned out to be faulty USB ports. Now, I try to clean it regularly, but when I attempted to put the side back on, the overheating issue returned. My friend says I might only have another two years before it completely fails. So, what should I be looking out for?

Just cleaning it normally might not be enough at this point. With 8 years on the clock, it’s likely that your CPU and GPU need thermal paste reapplied. It's a simple and cheap fix that enhances cooling. Also, don’t let your friend get you down; teasing like that is pretty shallow. It’d help if you could share some more details about your system like specs or pictures. For the overheating issue, we need to know how hot it gets—is it shutting down? Understanding your case and fan setup can help figure things out.
Have you changed out the thermal paste recently? After 8 years, it’s crucial to do that for effective cooling. I do it yearly just to be safe, but even if it's not every year, it’s time to think about it now.
If you share pictures, it might help us figure out how to manage the heat better. Also, remember to always test your components when you have issues. For example, try your headphones on another device to rule out problems before replacing them.
I think yearly is a bit much; quality thermal paste can last 5 years or more without issues. Just reapply if you remove the CPU cooler or if you notice your cooling is off.
