Need Career Change Advice: Moving from IT Support to Cybersecurity

I've spent four years working in an ICT Help Desk role at a retail company, where I've juggled responsibilities as a Business Analyst, System Administrator, and Project Manager. My experience covers ERP systems, Active Directory, Azure, networking, and more. Now, I'm really looking to transition into cybersecurity or a more advanced position than what I currently have at the help desk. What certifications or qualifications should I consider to improve my job prospects further?

For certifications, definitely start with CompTIA Security+ and then explore options like SC-100 and any courses from (ISC)². These will open up opportunities once you’re through them!

What other certifications do you think would supplement those after I finish the initial three?

What drives your motivation? If you're focused on financial growth, pursuing Business Analyst or Project Management roles could be more lucrative than going strictly into infrastructure. However, if you enjoy hands-on work and creative problem-solving, then make sure to lean into your strengths and passions. That's where you'll find the most satisfaction!

Honestly, anything that’s not the help desk! I've been burned out by repetitive tasks. I enjoy project management, and while my organization limits my growth due to budget issues, I feel I've been successful handling PM tasks.

I was in your situation a couple of years back. I had 12+ years in help desk and got burned out too. When I tried moving into cybersecurity, it was surprisingly dull—mostly writing and compliance checks. I decided to switch to network/system administration instead and loved it! I even got a $50K pay bump by focusing on skills and building a home lab. Consider real hands-on experience, and remember that interviews care more about your knowledge than just the certifications you hold!

Just a heads up: jumping straight into security might require you to start at an entry-level position with a potential pay cut since your current role may not directly transfer to cybersecurity.

Cybersecurity might seem glamorous with all the hacking hype, but it’s mostly about documentation and reports. If you're serious about it, I suggest starting with CompTIA Security+ as it’s a solid entry point. From there, look into AWS Certified Security or Cisco CCNA Security, especially if you're interested in cloud services. If you're considering a degree, Western Governors University offers a good accredited program that you can tailor to your pace. I’m almost done with mine, and it’s been quite rewarding!

Thanks for the insights! I’ve always been more interested in hands-on aspects like pentesting and setting up security policies, so I hope it won't be as dull as it sounds!
