I'm currently interning and I've been tasked with a project involving network component monitoring, and I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed about which tool to select. I'm looking at options like Nagios Core, Check_MK, Pandora FMS, and Zabbix. It's important for me to monitor not just network components but also servers and cameras. I recommend starting with the Check_MK community edition. It's free and can monitor a wide range of devices including servers, printers, cameras, and more. Plus, it comes with over 3000 default plugins and has secure communication. It’s a comprehensive solution that integrates well with different systems.
Check_MK is the way to go! I've been using it for a couple of years primarily for monitoring SNMP pings and outages. It allows for very detailed monitoring and is free for a decent number of sensors—around 600-700, I believe. It's definitely a solid choice.
Don’t overthink it too much for your short internship. Zabbix is a solid choice and quite popular. It provides a good overview for monitoring servers and cameras. Check_MK, on the other hand, is often quicker to set up and user-friendly with its auto-discovery feature. I’m a bit biased, but if you can, I’d definitely lean towards Check_MK!
