Hey everyone, I could really use some specific advice on picking a new CPU and motherboard. I'm planning to upgrade to a 240Hz monitor (currently have a 144Hz) and my current setup can't consistently hit 240fps.
Here's what I have:
- Pre-built HP system
- RTX 3060 Ti
- AMD Ryzen 7 4700G
- HP 87D6 motherboard
- 16GB RAM at 3200MHz in dual channel
- Basic cooling, nothing fancy
- A very small case
I'm looking to achieve a steady 240fps in games like Apex, League of Legends, Valorant, and Rainbow Six, especially Valorant.
I'm considering:
- A B550 motherboard
- Ryzen 7 5800X3D or Ryzen 5 5600
Budget is flexible as long as I can hit that steady 240fps. If you have any recommendations for a CPU and motherboard combo that would be suitable for my needs, I'd really appreciate it. Also, any benchmark experiences or good 240Hz monitor suggestions would be awesome. Thanks!

If you're sticking with the AM4 socket and want those high FPS counts, the Ryzen 5800X3D is a solid choice. As for the motherboard, a B550 should work just fine since you won’t need overclocking features for the X3D. Just a heads-up, though, finding the 5800X3D can be tricky—are you seeing any options available? They tend to be a bit rare and expensive nowadays.

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, I’ve noticed the 5800X3D is hard to find. Do you have any alternatives in mind that might work?
