I recently had Malwarebytes flag an adware on my computer that seems to have created a scheduled task. This task was set up yesterday at 11 PM and it aims to open a site called Demotrix when my system starts up. I don't remember installing anything new that day, and I'm a bit baffled. How could I have acquired this adware if I didn't download anything? Is it possible that it stemmed from something I installed previously but was only activated now? I'm looking for help to trace where this adware might have come from.

It's good that you deleted the task, but I'm interested to know where it originated from too. The site you mentioned, demotrix.org, seems a bit shady. You might want to check out the VirusTotal link you posted to see any related domains or connections.
I couldn’t find much info on a site called Demotrix, but if you're worried, just delete the scheduled task and run a scan with Windows Defender as a precaution.
