My aunt recently passed away, and as her next of kin, we inherited a brand new iPad she set up. Unfortunately, we don't have the Apple ID or password to access it. Apple informed us that we need legal documents to prove our status as her heirs, which could be expensive and require a lawyer. However, they don't accept just the death certificate. Does anyone have suggestions on how we might reset the iPad and bypass the Apple ID lock without spending too much?

Resetting the iPad is typically straightforward, but without proof of purchase, Apple's support might be limited. If getting a lawyer isn’t an option, try to find any digital receipts—those might help convince Apple to assist you.
We're definitely searching through her belongings to see if there's any paperwork or receipts. Fingers crossed we find something!
