Hey everyone! I'm hoping to get some assistance with a tricky issue. I work as a technician for an IT service provider, and I'm currently managing a project to renew the IT infrastructure for a company without an IT department.
Here's the problem: the company owns their domain, but it seems to have been linked to another M365/Entra tenant that wasn't properly removed. I received an error when trying to connect the domain to their new M365 setup. Unfortunately, we don't have any information about this previous tenant, and the former service provider isn't reachable.
The company has owned this domain for over 20 years, and we've opened a ticket with Microsoft last Wednesday. They promised to contact us within 8 hours, but we're still waiting. We've attempted to reach out multiple times, only to get automated responses directing us to send emails.
I could really use some advice on how to resolve this situation or any contacts at Microsoft who could help. We're located in Germany and would appreciate any guidance. Thanks in advance for your help!

Unfortunately, it looks like you will need the old tenant to remove the domain. You'll have to work with Microsoft to prove your ownership. There aren't really any shortcuts for this situation.
Yeah, definitely get your Microsoft reps involved. They should handle this for you and help chase it down.
You might want to check if you have control over the DNS records for your domain since you’ve had it for so long. There’s a tool called tenantidlookup.com that could help you find out which tenant your domain is linked to. Just plug in your domain and see what it gives you!
If you remove the old TXT verification record from your domain, it might invalidate the link with the old tenant. It's worth a shot!
