I'm the only tech at a medium-sized company and I'm working on establishing a solid naming convention for our Veeam backups. I currently have a naming format that feels overly complicated with too many segments, which just ends up looking like a long activation code. For example, my current layout is: Location-environment-servertype-os-backuptype-frequency. It's hard to keep track of what everything means. I'm looking for suggestions on a simpler yet effective naming standard for backups. How do you all name yours?

My setup is Jobtype-location-hypervisor-os-administrative tier, so for instance, I have Backup-SFO-HyperV-Win-Tier0. Once we finish our migration from VMware to HyperV, I’m considering dropping the hypervisor part to simplify it.
We usually combine the location abbreviation with the hostname, like XXX-DC01 or XXX-APP01. I think complex names can get a bit excessive. Simple names work better in my opinion.
As a solo tech myself, I tried to keep things under 4 segments max: Location-ServerName-BackupType (like NYC-DC01-Full). Veeam timestamps the backups, so including the date in the names is often unnecessary. The key is being able to read the names quickly, especially under pressure.
Hey there! I keep it pretty simple with my naming convention: Location-hostname-YYYYMMDD_HHmm. For example, it would look like Site1-DC02-20260330_1101. This way, I can easily tell what the backup is of and when it was created just by looking at the name.
